An amusing slip of the tongue, arising from
the confusion of similar-sounding words. The
term derives from the French mal a propos
(inappropriate); historically, it is
associated with Mrs Malaprop, a character in
Sheridan's play The Rivals 1775, who was the
pineapple (pinnacle) of perfection in such
matters.
